Maryland Chapter
We pull rabbits in need from shelters and provide essential veterinary care, including spay/neuter, vaccinations, and microchipping. Our adoptable rabbits live in foster care, where they can receive the regular, individualized attention they need and the opportunity to heal, both physically and emotionally. Once they’re healthy and ready, we place them into loving, life-long homes.
Forever homes are built on strong foundations. We guide every potential adopter through what it truly means to live with a house rabbit, from safe indoor housing and proper diet to enrichment, litter habits, and rabbit-proofing the home. We take the time to answer questions, set realistic expectations, and ensure each rabbit is matched with a home that fits their personality and needs.
Rescue doesn’t stop at adoption. We are committed to educating the community about proper rabbit care, responsible ownership, and the unique needs of these sensitive, often misunderstood animals. Through education and advocacy, we work to reduce neglect and prevent rabbits from ending up in shelters in the first place.
The MD/DC/NoVA Chapter of HRS is always seeking dedicated volunteers. We have general and specialized needs that you can contribute your time to. Help out as much or as little as you're able to. There are many ways in which you can help HRS rescue unwanted rabbits and find them a permanent home. They include: fostering rabbits, bunny-sitting, assisting with fundraising, staffing education tables, transporting rabbits and supplies, hosting or staffing adoption events, responding to public inquires, working with local shelters, writing articles, or creating graphics.
While every rabbit is special, some require additional care that makes finding them a home more challenging. Our Chapter provides these rabbits with a foster home for life, where they receive the love, safety, and medical attention they need. Each rabbit in our Sanctuary Program has a story, and you can be part of it. Our Chapter is proud to provide lifelong care for these special rabbits, and your support makes that commitment possible. By sponsoring a Sanctuary Rabbit with a one-time or recurring donation, you help cover essential needs like medical treatment, specialized diets, and daily care supplies.
A major part of our mission success comes from the partners we have for animal care, provisions, medical needs, and the resources we have in the surrounding community.
The very best way to find a friend for your rabbit is to let your rabbit choose. Many people come to HRS when looking for a second rabbit because of several advantages we offer. First and foremost, adopting a rabbit from HRS allows us to rescue another rabbit waiting at a local shelter and thus saves a life. All our foster rabbits are already spayed and neutered, which makes it possible for your rabbit interact with a number of potential partners. If your rabbit is not already fixed, we advise you to have this procedure completed at least two weeks before meeting with other rabbits. This is crucial, not only for reproductive health reasons, but because intact rabbits can be very territorial and are far less likely to accept a new bunny friend.
We have many opportunities for volunteers to help in a myriad of ways.
If you're not ready to adopt, or you'd like some experience, you can foster one of our rabbits.
